Scottish News: Girl, 10, has her foot mown off by her dad

The foot of a 10-year-old girl was chopped off yesterday when she slipped under a farm mower being driven by her dad.

The schoolgirl, who has not yet been named, is now recovering in hospital.

A police source said the youngster's right foot was "chopped off instantly" when she fell on a Perthshire farm.

The accident happened at 11am as she walked alongside the lawnmower trailer attached to a tractor.

She was comforted by her distraught dad until the emergency services arrived.

Police had difficulty reaching the remote farm and eventually had to use a 4x4 vehicle.

A local doctor treated the girl as they waited on an air ambulance to arrive from Glasgow.

She was then flown to Dundee's Ninewells Hospital for further treatment.

The accident happened at 550 acre Mains of Murthly Farm near Aberfeldy, owned by John McDairmid and run by his son Calum.

Last night, John revealed his son had been comforting the youngster's parents at the hospital.

Stable He said: "The girl's father has been a full-time employee of mine for many years. A very good and valuable employee at that.

"I have been away on business and was not actually here at the time of the accident.

"All I can really say is that my thoughts are with the poor wee lassie and her mother and father at this time."

He confirmed the family lived in Perth but said he had to respect the privacy of his employee and couldn't name him or the little girl.

Son Calum later added: "She is absolutely fine and she's stable."

One local, who would often see the girl with her father at the farm, said: "I don't know her name but she was a lovely little girl and I hope she's going to be fine."

A spokesman for Tayside Police confirmed last night: "Officers attended and found a 10-year-old girl with a serious foot injury.

"Early inquiries would indicate that the girl had been walking alongside a tractor pulling a lawnmower trailer when she slipped under the mower, amputating her right foot.

"Her condition is currently described as serious but not life-threatening.

"As with all industrial accidents, the Health and Safety Executive have been informed and a representative will be attending to carry out their own inquiries."

An HSE spokeswoman later confirmed: "An inspector has been on site today.

My aluminum utility trailer is the high-side type, to access the cargo area means either climbing on the trailer tongue and front toolbox, or lowering the 6 1/2 foot high rear gate. I kept trying to think of a way to build an easier method to get in and out...saw this aluminum RV ladder at a local Goodwill store for $5. The third picture shows it clamped to the side of the trailer with the part I cut off at the top right. I used part of the cut off section to build the two upper horizontal mounts. Both ladder ideas look good. I will just have to experiment like you did. Mine just has the aluminum side racks. I hauled some mulch and just wired some chip board on the racks. This worked OK for just a small job. I like the boards you have in yours and in that way I could just keep then there all the time, My tail gate is a lot different then yours, its a bi-fold and a lot more open in the back. I had to throw a tarp over the mulch. As far as pictures go I never tryed it yet so I don't know if I know how to do it. I am sure I will mess it up.
