An Olympic appetite for more gold — at age 40

LOGAN, Utah — The line between national hero and big, dumb loser is surprisingly thin.

Nobody knows that better than Rulon Gardner. He grew up a pudgy special ed student in western Wyoming and went on to Olympic stardom.

He has always used slights as fuel for his competitiveness and motivation for the next challenge. Laugh at his chunky frame, consider him stupid. Label him a quitter, call him a loser. He'll show you.

That's what he plans to do. Again.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln graduate went on the TV weight-loss show "The Biggest Loser," had a bitter experience and wants to compete in the Olympics one more time.

"I've got something to prove now," Gardner, 39, said here recently.

Gardner will participate in a speaking tour sponsored by livewellnebraska.com. The tour starts Aug. 9 and will take place over four days in five cities: York, Grand Island, Kearney, North Platte and Scottsbluff.

His highs and lows have reached ridiculous extremes. Olympic gold in Greco-Roman wrestling in 2000, Olympic bronze in 2004. At least twice he has been near death, once in a plane crash in Lake Powell, Utah, and once almost frozen in a mountain mishap.

But his most recent flirtation with death, far more mundane, is one with which millions of Americans can identify. The 6-foot-1 Gardner, a super-heavyweight wrestler in his prime, grew obese. He weighed about 475 pounds when he went on "The Biggest Loser," dropped about 200 pounds and learned a lot about weight loss.

He faced up to the havoc that overeating was causing his body. He tries to avoid having a fourth meal at the end of the day. He knows small changes can make a big difference. He thinks about the calories in a saltine cracker and in a king-size chocolate candy bar. He exercises.

"You can get back on the right path," he said.

The TV show helped him regain his health. "It was the only thing that did it," he said.

Nevertheless, Gardner expressed anger toward "The Biggest Loser." He said it made him look bad and compelled people to think he was a quitter. That galled him. It put the fire back in his gut and now he wants to return to the Olympics. He would be nearly 41 during the Summer Olympics next year in London.

His goal may seem silly, but many who know him say he might achieve it.

Open Question: Lose more weight or just exercise? | Child lose weight

I need some advice from someone who’s knowledgeable about fitness. I’m 5’1.5” and 121 lbs right now, I recently lost 25 pounds. I’m in a healthy weight range now for my height but many places on the internet have said my ideal weight would be around 110 lbs. I don’t really care about the number on the scale but I still have a good bit of extra fat on my upper back and stomach, as well as my upper arms.

At this point in my weight loss journey I’m not sure what to do to get rid of that; it’s becoming very hard for me to lose weight where I am right now. I’ve started doing yoga and I’m trying to keep it up 2-3 days a week. To lose the extra flab, should I continue my food diet and keep exercising, or should I just go back to a normal healthy maintaining diet and continue to exercise? Will just exercise get rid of that extra fat by tightening up or is dieting the only way for it to completely go away? If anyone can give me some direction and insight that would be great.
