Jimmy Marcus, Sean Devine a Dave Boyle jsou přáteli už od dětství. Jejich poslední setkání však není příjemné. Sean v roli policisty vyšetřuje případ smrti Jimmyho nejstarší dcery Katie. Okolnosti její smrti jsou velice podivné a tak musí Sean vybrat z mnoha zmatených stop tu jedinou, která by vedla k objasnění případu. A pak je tu ještě Jimmyho vztek a touha po odplatě. Sean tedy stojí před velice zamotanou záhadou...

Za roli Sam Dawsona byl nominován na Oscara. Mimo to, že je herec režíroval také thrillery Vyvrhel nebo Křižovatka smrti. Napsal je a produkoval. Vedle Davida Leana a Andrewa Davise patří mezi režijní vzory herce a režiséra C.T. Howella. Jack Nicholson, který hraje v jeho snímku Křižovatka smrti o něm tvrdí, že je režijně Penn obrovský talent. Je synem režiséra Arthura Penna, v jehož filmu Judgment in Berlin má cameo svědka při procesu. Jeho mladší bratr Christopher Penn je také herec a starší bratr Michael Penn je hudebníkem. První roli dostal v seriálu Barnaby Jones. Hrál především role drsných a problémových mladíků. Za svůj herecký výkon v kritiky ceněném snímku Clinta Eastwooda Tajemná řeka z roku 2003 obdržel Oscara pro nejlepšího herce ve vedlejší roli, Zlatý glóbus, cenu SAG a Broadcast Film Critics Society Award. Robbins také napsal, zrežíroval a produkoval film Cradle Will Rock, který měl premiéru v roce 1999 na MFF v Cannes.
