Alabama Hunting and Fishing with Jeff Dute: Trash around Katrina Cut, Dog ...
Dog River Scenic Blueway WoesMy wife and I had the kids out on the west end of Dauphin Island near Katrina Cut on an absolutely beautiful morning two days ago.
While my other four daughters kept their aunt busy where we'd anchored the boat in the Mississippi Sound shallows, Aimee and I took our 2-year-old for a walk. She wanted a closer look at a huge mixed flock of gulls, skimmers and pelicans where they rested several hundred yards to the east.
I was lost in the beauty of the island when my wife's voice awoke me out of a very contented state.
"Look at that," she said with disgust. "Why would someone do that?"
The "that" she spoke of was a line of probably two-dozen or more beer cans lying in a line where they'd been deposited by the high tide on the beach.
The cardboard box that had held the case of beer was semi-buried in the sand along with snack wrappers, Ziplock bags and several other pieces of evidence left of someone else's day at the beach.
There was even an abandoned lawn chair, most of its aluminum legs also buried by the shifting sands of several tide cycles. In the relatively short distance we walked, the amount of trash on that stretch of beach was startling.
Ironically, that theme was brought home with a greater punch in my gut that afternoon when I saw the heartbreaking YouTube video shot by a kayaker after 2½ inches of rain fell on the Dog River watershed on July 25. (See it at www.youtube.com, search "Dog River Scenic Blueway Woes.")
My in-laws live just downriver from Navco Park, so I spend a lot of time on the river and I've fished it for 20 years or more. My kids swim in it.
After seeing this, I may think twice about ever letting them dive in again.
I can't even describe the amount of trash and other debris floating down the river. It covers untold acres on the surface. The most noticeable items are what appear to be hundreds if not thousands of Styrofoam containers of various shapes and sizes.
There's no telling what kind of chemical compounds were being carried along unseen under the water. It makes me shudder to think of the devastating possibilities.
It was sickening watching seagulls dive over the mess.
Gulf Of Mexico Fishing - News
Bobby Cleveland/The Clarion-Ledger WAVELAND — It was one of those rare windless days in the Gulf of Mexico that you both love and hate. But without any wind, the summer heat and humidity were stifling and the biting flies brutal.
All of the stuff washing out of Dog River and its tributaries winds up in our Mobile Bay and ultimately our Gulf of Mexico. I'm all about giving people the benefit of the doubt. I understand that stuff accidentally blows out of a boat or even the bed

"When we see a storm like this one coming in the (Gulf of Mexico), we try not to overstock supplies,” Thompson said. That's our best bet, and then hopefully make it up when the weather gets better. If you overstock in a small place like this,
Help RESTORE Sportfishing in the Gulf of Mexico
It’s been over a year since the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and while tremendous fishing opportunities abound in the Gulf of Mexico, the impacts of the spill are ongoing and can be seen in degraded habitats and reduced tourism activity, especially recreational fishing. A coalition of Senators from Gulf states recently introduced the RESTORE the Gulf Coast Act of 2011 (S. 1400) , which will provide much needed money to the region to restore the Gulf Coast environment and economy and help bring anglers back to the region.
This bill directs critical funding to the Gulf of Mexico region to help revitalize coastal communities and improve fisheries habitat and data collection.
