The Montana Shakespeare Company returns to the stage after a year’s absence. And it’s pulling out one of its most popular plays — “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged),” opening 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 22. It runs weekends through Aug. 13, at Café Zuppa in the Placer Center.
But this season is but a prelude to an ambitious dream planned for next season.
This year’s offering is your favorite plays by the Bard, thrown together in a high speed blender and spilled out rapid fire onstage.
Othello zips by in rap, Romeo’s grown big hair and is duded up in a leather jacket, and Juliet’s decked out in a pink poodle skirt and beard.
Expect some flamboyant gender bending — by this high spirited three-member cast — Mary Linn Crouse, Daniel Zent and Bryan Ferriter, all appearing under their own names as they flash through numerous Shakespearean personas.
It’s a fast-paced mix of vaudeville and the Marx Brothers crossed with the Three Stooges, all delivered in condensed Shakespearean dialog while wearing a rag tag array of costumes.
The popular comedy by Adam Long, Daniel Singer and Jess Winfield debuted at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1987 and has since gone on to be wildly popular.
Without a doubt, it’s likely to be one of the fastest-moving Shakespeare productions you’ll ever see, with Hamlet, angst and all, condensed to a mere 43 seconds. . . and, by the way, he’s played by a woman — Crouse.
