Pet Talk: Tips for when your furry friends join you on vacation
Also, think about your pet's temperament. Easily stressed pets do best staying at home with a trusted pet sitter, says Dr. Jason Nicholas of The Preventive Vet .A quick Internet search can find pet-friendly hotels or campgrounds in moments. The tricky part is getting there without too much fur flying.
If you do decide to take your four-footed family member on vacation, here are some things you should know.
If you're taking
Rover on a road trip
First things first, put your pet in a carrier or crate. If you're driving for any length of time, keep your pets in a carrier at all times. It can be a matter of life or death.
"There is no greater joy for a dog than to stick his head out the window," says Walt McAllister, a safety expert for the Oregon Department of Transportation . "But he could get stung, bugs or rocks could fly in his eyes, or he could occasionally get whacked by another vehicle. It's just best to put them in a carrier."
McAllister and his colleagues have heard it all: tales of animals attaching themselves to the backs of drivers' heads or necks, scurrying under the gas or brake pedals or preventing the driver from steering in an emergency maneuver.
A loose pet in your car also could be dangerous to other passengers.
"Think about anything unsecured in the car," says Marie Dodds, spokeswoman for AAA Oregon/Idaho . "If you have to slam on the brakes, it goes flying." As for having your Lhasa Apso ride lapside, think again. An animal in a driver's lap is considered driving while encumbered, which is illegal in Oregon. Plus, Dodds cautions, what if the airbag deploys?
Instead, get Fluffy comfy in a carrier outfitted with a blanket, small litter box, food and water dish, suggests Covey, who has driven cross-country with her two cats -- twice.
Acclimate your pet to the carrier well in advance of your trip, Nicholas says. Leave it out in the open the week before you leave to give them time to get used to it. Other options include crates, pet restraints, pet beds or booster seats.
A host of pet product and car manufacturers now make products for traveling with pets. A harness "will not only make them more secure but can make them feel more secure and therefore less prone to vomit," Nichols says.
To help calm pets -- and avoid carsickness -- try Feliway for cats or Dog Appeasing Pheromone , which ease anxiety and calm the animal.
