Reproducing Mason County pieces of the Tuttle era
The style has largely been attributed to Mason County cabinetmaker Peter Tuttle.
But the "style" of Kentucky case-on-frame furniture, crafted between the years 1790 and 1835, came under investigation by the Headley-Whitney Museum in 1996 for a proposed exhibition of Kentucky furniture.
In 2000, the Headley-Whitney Museum published its The Tuttle Muddle: An Investigation of a Kentucky Case-on-Frame Furniture Group , in conjunction with the exhibition. The book sheds more light on the cabinetmakers of the early 19th century who produced their work in the Mason County Region.
The following is excerpt from the book's introduction.
"Around the turn of the nineteenth century, a young cabinetmaker from Virginia named Peter Tuttle migrated to Mason County, Kentucky. For the past 30 years or more, a significant group of furniture, including the pieces in this exhibition, have been attributed to him. The discovery of a carved "P * Tuttle" mark in the upper drawer of one chest of drawers has led some people to believe that Tuttle was the maker of this case-on-frame furniture. This detail is significant, but probably not substantial enough to attribute this body of work to him alone. To help determine the possible origins of the pieces, over 60 examples were surveyed: more are known to exist. The large quantity of surviving pieces, coupled with the fact that there are many variations in construction, suggests that more than one craftsman or shop was at work on this group.
The 17 pieces of furniture in this exhibition and in the group previously attributed to Peter Tuttle are examples of case-on-frame construction. The forms include chests of drawers or bureaus, slant-front desks and blanket chests. All are on frames with a distinctive cabriole leg and shaped aprons. This style was embraced in the Outer Bluegrass region of Kentucky, an area of the state bordered to the north by the Ohio River that includes Mason, Fleming, Nicholas and Lewis Counties. The sheer quantity of surviving examples seems to indicate that the style was in demand by consumers. This case-on-frame furniture with its characteristic aprons and "bandy legs" was unique to this region of Kentucky. Oral history indicates that most of the pieces first appeared in this region, though none have a clear provenance established before the twentieth century."
Another excerpt shows: "During the research on the Peter Tuttle connection, documentary evidence provided new information on cabinetmakers previously unknown to scholars of Kentucky furniture. The investigation uncovered several families of cabinetmakers working in early communities in the Mason County region. In 1810, residing in Lewisburg, were cabinetmakers Gerrard Calvert, John Foxworthy and Peter Tuttle ... Genealogical records reveal that the three men were born in Prince William County, Virginia. Additionally, both Tuttle and Foxworthy married Calvert's nieces ... In 1810 both Peter Tuttle and John Foxworthy were in their twenties. At 39 years of age, Calvert was considerably older than his two nephews and had likely been engaged in his craft far longer... As a master cabinetmaker, it is plausible that Calvert may have employed journeymen such as Tuttle and Foxworthy in his shop.
