Guest Column: Proposed county tax increase is small for way residents get

I also attended the last Town Hall meeting on the county budget that Lance Thate referred to in his letter a few days ago. There are many people in this community who were not at that meeting, who pay taxes just like everyone else, and fall on both sides of this discussion. But the Tea Party supporters are not the only taxpayers in town.

There were many speakers in favor of no tax increases with suggestions on how the county could "save money." I was impressed when the County Administrator agreed with more than 50 percent of the serious suggestions, indicating many were underway or had been implemented. He got little recognition for having already been on the ball. Repeatedly, the County Administrator was told, "tighten up, there's fat in the budget." I hear that all the time, it's easy to say. The county has laid off, "encouraged" early retirement, or given mandatory furloughs to a number of local residents -- those were not easy, and many of those people were not "part of the fat".

Thate oversimplifies when he breaks this discussion into two sides: those in favor of the tax increase proposal -- "who must have an interest in county government, be county employees or receive personal benefit from the government," or those who oppose "and seemed to be the ones doing the paying."

We operate one of the best foreclosure prevention programs in the state, working with more than 40 homeowners every month. We are good stewards of those tax dollars.

There are many strong examples of non-profits who add significantly to the quality of life in our community. Where would we be without the Council on Aging Sunshine Bus service? COA leverages 90 cents for every dime they get from the county. Look at all the volunteers with Meals on Wheels and the growing list of services that COA provides. These services exist, and our community quality of life is better, because non-profits have a small ongoing base of support from St. Johns County government -- your tax dollars.
