Daviess adds 1275 jobs over past year

July 30--Daviess County companies added 1,275 jobs in the past year, records at the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training show.

"We're extremely pleased, " said Nick Brake, president of the Greater Owensboro Economic Development Corp. "It's something we've been expecting with all the construction and expansions we've seen this year."

But, he said, "I'm a little apprehensive about what's going on nationally. I hope it doesn't slow our growth."

The county's unemployment rate only dropped from 9 percent to 8.4 percent in the past year.

That's because 1,162 more people entered the job market here between June 2010 and June 2011.

The state said people who had given up on looking for work in the past are re-entering the job market now.

The latest records released this week show 50,092 people in the county's labor force and 45,864 with jobs. Another 4,228 are still hunting for work.

Hancock County had the state's fifth-lowest unemployment rate -- and western Kentucky's lowest -- in June at 7.8 percent, down from 8.8 percent a year earlier.

Ohio County had the seventh-lowest rate at 8 percent, down from 8.8 percent a year earlier.

McLean County reported a 9.1 percent jobless rate last month, down from 10.8 percent in June 2010.

And Muhlenberg County had a 10.5 percent rate in June, down from 11.1 percent a year earlier.

The state said 96 counties saw lower unemployment rates last month than they did 12 months earlier.

Woodford County had the state's lowest rate at 7.4 percent.

Jackson County had the highest rate at 16.8 percent.

Fulton County had western Kentucky's highest jobless rate at 14.3 percent.

Kentucky's 9.8 percent unemployment rate was the lowest since January 2009, the report said.

The state's high-paying manufacturing sector added 4,000 jobs in the past year -- 1,200 of them in the month ending June 30, the report said.

Brake said local manufacturing "is starting to climb back."

The latest report didn't include the number of new manufacturing jobs in Daviess County.

But Kim Brannock, a spokeswoman for the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet, said 193 manufacturing jobs had been added in the Owensboro metropolitan area -- Daviess, Hancock and McLean counties -- in the year ending May 30.

That brought the total to 8,101 manufacturing jobs in the three counties.
