Stately award: Marietta bank earns praise as it celebrates second anniversary

“I was excited and surprised just because we beat out such big-name, nationwide companies,” said Sarah Gaither, Marietta branch manager and State Trust vice president. “I think it sends a message of stability. Right now, in the financial sector, it’s hard to come back, and for you to feel like a bank is stable with your financial funds. So clients feel secure that their money’s not going anywhere, and the bank’s not going to be taken over. And it says stability for employees as well, because they can feel their jobs are not in jeopardy, and that their hard work is paying off and we’re moving in the right direction.” Bank Director’s analysis, compiled by research firm Sandler O’Neill, is designed to identify institutions that are strong in three critical areas: profitability, capital and asset quality. The scorecard uses “return on average assets,” “return on average equity,” and “ratio of tangible common equity to tangible assets” as a measurements of profitability and capital. The rankings also gauged a bank’s “ratio of non-performing assets to loans and other real estate owned,” and “ratio of net charge offs to average loans” to measure asset quality. In 2010, State Bank (NASDAQ:STBZ) recorded 1.66 percent return on average assets (No. 4 ranking), 13.07 percent return on average equity (No. 10), 12.42 percent tangible common equity to tangible assets (No. 10), 1.20 percent non-performing assets to loans and other real estate owned (No. 17), and a 0.13 ratio of net charge offs to average loans (No. 5), for composite score of 35. The second-place bank, First Financial Bank Shares, Inc. of Texas, scored 53.5. Four other Georgia-based banks made the list, though they trailed State Bank significantly in the rankings. SunTrust Banks Inc. was placed 125th with a score of 444.5; while Moultrie-based Ameris Bancorp ranked 133rd with a score of 473.5. Columbus-based Synovus Financial Corp. placed 139th with a score of 531.5; and Blairsville-based United Community Bank placed 143rd with a score of 542.5.

Buckhead Branch Adds Three New Hires - Georgia Commerce Bank

Georgia Commerce Bank has announced three new hires at its expanding Buckhead branch.

Erin Darcy has been hired as a vice president and assistant branch manager. In this position, she is responsible for assisting the branch manager with the planning, directing and organizing of the sales and daily operational activities of the assigned branch, including development of new business, servicing accounts, cashiering, customer relations and overall management of the branch staff and operations. Darcy earned her degree from Miami University in Ohio and previously served as a branch manager at State Bank and Trust Company and as branch manager at The Midtown Community Bank, a division of The Buckhead Community Bank.

 

Christin Nally Viola will serve as a senior mortgage consultant. Viola will originate and close all residential loans for primary residences, second homes or investment properties on both the purchase and refinance sides. Viola earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration at the University of Georgia, where she majored in international finance and minored in Spanish. She has 10 years of experience in residential mortgage. Previously, she served as executive vice president at Capital City Mortgage Corporation, where she managed the company’s largest pipeline of brokered loans and averaged $12 million in loans annually. Prior to mortgage lending, she spent several years in tax consulting with Arthur Andersen LLP in Atlanta.

 

Alison Spurlock has been named a relationship account manager and teller. In this position, she will handle customers’ daily service and transactional needs. Spurlock has more than 20 years of banking experience and previously worked at SunTrust Bank and Metropolitan Bank in Ohio.
