County Manager Randall Reid has requested that the County Commission — the real one — increase the general property-tax rate by about 4 percent while maintaining the rates for the municipal services taxing units that fund law enforcement, fire rescue and unincorporated services.
That would raise an additional $1.56 million, which could be set aside to partially fund Sheriff Sadie Darnell's request for $2 million more than this year.
Reid explained Saturday that Darnell is looking to add 48 new positions — 46 for the jail and two for her information
technology department.
None of the other constitutional officers has asked for more employees.
In a preliminary vote on July 12, the commission voted 3-2 to raise the general tax rate and the MSTU rate.
The three who voted for the measure — Mike Byerly, Paula DeLaney and Rodney Long — said they would likely move to maintain the MSTU rates, which would actually reduce revenues because the taxable property value is down more than 3 percent.
Things weren't all that complicated in the budget exercise Saturday, though there was a wrinkle thrown in. Halfway through, Suzanne Gable, the director of the county's Office of Management and Budget, said that a jail inmate had been hurt in a "catastrophic event," requiring an additional $1,000 to be spent on medical care.
Therefore, the mock commissioners would need to cut an additional $3,700 — or 9.25 percent — from the budget.

When the $50 for the community farmers market was raised as a potential cut, Desjardin, 86, announced, "Let's vote on it.
