Lincoln students' toils pay off at State Fair

STOCKTON - In May, time was running out for Devin Duaime to achieve the goal he had pursued for nearly a year.

Duaime was building a 37-foot trailer, an undertaking that had consumed more than 1,000 hours, much of that time in solitude in the wee hours of weekend mornings in warehouse space at the Port of Stockton.

The 18-year-old's goal was to win the top prize at the California State Fair in the Industrial and Technology Education competition. But on that fateful day in May, the deadline to enter his project was less than two hours away, and he still wasn't finished.

"An hour and a half before it had to be in Sacramento, I was pushing in the last screw," Duaime recalled this week as he sat in the computerized drafting classroom at the Engineering and Construction Academy at Lincoln High School.

Duaime's labors paid off. When the awards ceremony was held Saturday at the State Fair, he walked off with the top prize. His emotion afterward was not so much elation as relief.

"The last 20 days, reality was setting in," said Duaime, who graduated in May from Lincoln's construction academy. "Me and my dad busted the hump. It took a tremendous amount of work."

Duaime hardly was alone among Lincoln students in bringing home hardware from Sacramento.

A team of eight Lincoln students built a log splitter, an effort that earned them the state award for outstanding group project.

Additionally, student Trevor Enos won a first-place prize for his architectural model of a bridge.

Lincoln teacher Jeff Wright, for whom the school's engineering academy is named, said, "It's so rewarding. This academy is all about the kids."

Duaime's flatbed gooseneck trailer with a hydraulic ramp is a real-world example of what students can accomplish when given the opportunity to focus on what they love.

Duaime saw his project through from the initial germ of an idea to studying commercially produced trailers to drafting his plans on a computer to the long hours spent building it. Industry professionals provided Duaime with financial and technical support.

In two months, Duaime will be a freshman at Oregon State University, majoring in civil and mechanical engineering. Lincoln's Engineering and Construction Academy helped pave the way.
