Tiny plant pest is worth hunting
There is a teeny tiny little pest rearing its obnoxious head in gratitude for hot, dry days of summer: May I introduce the two-spotted spider mite, alias Tetranychus urticae.
Sometimes difficult to spot with the naked eye, this little eight-legged bug is considered among the most problematic pest that growers face. They are cousins to true spiders, ticks and daddy longlegs. Fully grown, they are about the size of a grain of pepper, but when a family of them decides to dine, the havoc they can wreak is amazing.
Their claim to fame is a piercing mouth part called a stylet, which they use to puncture a plant's cell to feast on its sugary juices and chlorophyll. When chlorophyll, which gives the leaf its green color, is extracted, the leaf will be dotted with pale colorless specks. If the infestation is great enough, you may be able to see a tiny web, and as the feeding frenzy continues, the leaf falls off.
Spider mites typically go undetected because of their size and the fact that they live in the shaded protection of the underside of the leaf. Unless we scout for them regularly, their presence won't be discovered until they've had a population explosion and caused irreversible damage
They aren't really choosy about host plants; annuals, shrubs, evergreens, perennials and our precious houseplants are fair game. To check for mites, take a white piece of paper, hold it flat under a suspected leaf and lightly tap the top of the leaf. The mites will lose their grip and fall onto the paper; the tiny dark specks will resemble pepper, but if you look closely, they'll be moving.
Their life cycle is pretty typical; the adult female overwinters in plant debris. Outdoors, it will be around the base of the plant in fallen leaves and she will emerge come spring; indoors she can nestle just below the soil surface, in the nooks and crannies of the bottom branches or even under the pot rim, emerging come winter with the dry indoor heat. She'll deposit her eggs on the undersides of the leaf. The eggs hatch after a few days to a few weeks, with tiny larvae crawling out to begin feeding immediately. They will molt two times within a few weeks before reaching adulthood.
So what can plant owners do? For starters, spider mites aren't fond of water, so if you have the time and patience you can bathe the infected plant daily with soapy water (1 teaspoon to a quart of water) then rinse, remembering the mites' place of residence is on the underside of the leaf. Natural predators are lacewing and ladybug.

Former Professor: Department of Medicine, McGill University, Montreal, CanadaDiabetes affects 10-25 million North Americans most, as yet, undiagnosed. It is, of course, an insulin disorder that impairs the body’s ability to metabolize sugar. Although this problem is dealt with by providing insulin or drugs to lower blood sugar, diabetic individuals exhibit other related medical problems. One of the main complications of this illness is damage to the circulatory system (both large and small vessels) leading to atherosclerosis (plaque build-up in vessel walls), heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, renal failure, neuropathy (nerve damage), blindness and gangrene. The other main complication of diabetes is an impaired immune system, as a result of which diabetics are more likely to succumb to infections (another reason why they are at risk for gangrene). It is well documented that diabetic individuals have an increased level of oxidative stress and free radical formation in their tissues. By the same token, their blood and tissues are marked by critically low glutathione levels. A reasonable assumption is that the increased oxidative stress depletes the tissues of glutathione, the latter being the major intracellular antioxidant responsible for neutralizing the free radicals. There is good evidence that a weakened glutathione antioxidant system is responsible, at least in part, for the observed cardiovascular disease seen in diabetics and a role for supplementation with antioxidants has been proposed, for example by Giugliano et al. and Dominguez et al. as well as others. Similarly, the impaired immune function seen in diabetics could be due, at least in part, to glutathione deficiency. (The importance of glutathione for the immune system is discussed in the article entitled ‘The Immune System: Role of Glutathione’).
