This year's Fowlerville Family Fair promises to celebrate the event's past and future.

The 125th installment of the fair takes place Monday through July 30 at the Fowlerville Fairgrounds, 8800 W. Grand River Ave. in Handy Township.

State funding cuts a few years ago led to the coordinators of the Fowlerville Family Fair looking at ways to cut costs and bring in more revenue and the group has done just that, according to Fowlerville Fairgrounds Office Manager Jennifer Rhodes.

"We've made a lot of changes in the last couple years and have come out of those funding issues pretty well," Rhodes said. "We've been able to continue to put on a good show and bring in more money."

This year brings some new attractions, including a combine derby and an open class of fair memorabilia, as well as old favorites, like the 4-H exhibits.

A new logo will be unveiled Monday — the result of a design contest open to the community. The last logo, designed in 1993, shows a draft horse show team — but the draft shows were eliminated several years ago, so it's time for a new logo.

Members of the community of all ages were invited to submit artwork showing what the fair means to them. The winner will be announced Monday and will receive free admission to each day of the fair, their choice of one free grandstand night, a limo ride to the fair on Monday, courtesy of Perfection Limousine Service, and additional prizes.

Although the fair looks to the future with the new logo, it is also looking back at its history with the new open-class category — fair memorabilia. Fairgoers are invited to enter photos of past fairs along with posters and other souvenirs. The memorabilia will be on display, showing a community history of the fair.

Skerbeck Brothers Carnival, which is partnering with the Fowlerville Fair for the first time, will bring 27 rides to the fair, along with games and concessions. The attractions include a roller-coaster ride, and the Mulligan wheel, a super Ferris wheel.

Rhodes said although the fair has grown since it began in 1887, its focus remains the same: agricultural education.

She said that the fair began when a group of men formed the Fowlerville Agricultural Society, hoping to fill a need for agricultural preservation and education. The following year, the first Fowlerville Fair took place. It was seen as so important that the village of Fowlerville shut down so the whole community could go to the fair.
