Hazleton Area in search of new super
HAZLETON - The Hazleton Area School District is searching for a new superintendent.
The school board approved an agreement that ends Sam Marolo's employment contract two years early at a special meeting Thursday.
Marolo's current contract is set to expire June 30, 2014. The agreement would truncate the contract in 2012.
Board President Clarence John said details of the agreement would not be made public until Marolo signs the documents.
John said the agreement includes a seven-day right of rescission that affords Marolo seven days to decide whether to accept the deal and sign the agreement.
Marolo did not attend Thursday's meeting.
"(The agreement) is not signed and Mr. Marolo is not here to sign it. He won't be back until Tuesday," John said.
Approval of the agreement was the only item on the agenda for the board's 5 p.m. public meeting. After calling the meeting to order, the board adjourned to a closed-door executive session that continued until 7:15 p.m., leaving approximately 25 citizens in the audience waiting about two hours for the meeting to reconvene.
After emerging from the session, Director Robert Childs made a motion to approve the agreement. Director Robert Mehalick seconded to the motion and the deal was approved 8-1, with Director Tony Bonomo the only dissenting vote.
Immediately after approving the agreement, John said he would read a prepared statement and provide a printed copy of the statement to the press, and no other comment on the agreement would be made by any member of the board.
John said the directive was on the advice of the board's labor attorney, Carl Beard.
Neither Beard nor district solicitor Chris Slusser were in attendance.
"After a thorough review of the direction that our school district was following, the board of education and Mr. Sam Marolo have mutually agreed to take a different path and, as such, is approving this agreement tonight," the statement said.
"The board of education's labor attorney, Mr. Carl Beard, has been asked to coordinate a search for a new permanent superintendent and this process will begin immediately," the statement continued.
Deputy Superintendent Dr. Francis X. Antonelli will run the day-to-day activities in the district, the statement said.
Members of the media asked the board to release details of the agreement and divulge information on the amount of the severance payment, if any, Marolo would receive, citing the right to public disclosure of expenditures of taxpayer dollars.
