Through the investigation, police determined the alleged burglar entered the building via the Winsted News, a neighboring business. Winchester police charged Brian Bergmann, 24, of 89 Hillside Ave., with third-degree burglary, possession of burglar tools and third-degree criminal mischief for the Thursday morning incident. No cat was ever found during the investigation, police said. Police responded to the apartment building at 420 Main St. around 2:30 a.m. for a vandalism complaint. The complainant noticed one of the stairway’s protective metal treads was removed and that the top stair footboard, where the tread was attached, was split in half, but still intact. About an hour later, police responded to the same building because the complainant heard strange noises coming from the hallway and thought someone was under the stairs, police said. The officer asked Bergmann what was going on. He said he was “looking for his cat,” police said. Bergmann said his cat got out of his home and he followed the animal, which eventually went through the broken stair. Police noted the glass door in the front of the building, which is always closed. Bergmann told police the cat entered the building while someone was leaving. Police contacted the owner of Winsted News at 418 Main St., which connects to the apartment building, to investigate the alleged burglary.
