Greetings From Maine

It’s 10:05 on Sunday evening. I’m on vacation in West Bath, Maine with my wife and my grandson, Logan.  The copy for my column was supposed to be in by ten tonight, but I’ve just begun to write. 

I pride myself in having never missed a deadline. Deadlines are important, particularly in the publishing business. You’re probably thinking since it’s after ten; I’m late; I’ve missed my first deadline. But you’d be wrong. 

Early this morning, I emailed my editor and asked if I could get an extension on my deadline. I told him I’d gladly get it in on time if it was crucial, but he graciously granted me the extra time and told me to “have fun”. That was a Godsend. 

Today is the first day of our vacation. Technically it began yesterday, but a five-and-a-half hour drive in heavy traffic doesn’t really qualify as vacation in my book. The traffic on the way up here made the Five Corners construction horror show look mild in comparison. Our trip took about two- hours-and-fifteen minutes longer than it should have. 

It all started at the Big Dig. The ride in to Boston was smooth. There was very little traffic. Then we reached the tunnel and it was bumper to bumper, barely moving at times. 

About a mile from the Tobin Bridge and the Route One exit; two Massachusetts State Police cars came up on our left with sirens blaring. They were leading a funeral procession; a huge funeral procession. As we approached the exit, which is to the left; I was forced to cut in to the middle of the line of cars that were part of the funeral motorcade. I had no choice unless I wanted to visit Medford, which I didn’t. 

The guy behind me, who was part of the funeral caravan, leaned on his horn for what seemed like five minutes. What a *$@#$%! idiot! Yeah, dude; I cut in to the funeral processions for fun. That’s how I get my jollies. Oh, and nice way to show your respect for the deceased; you dill weed! 

We exited on to Route One where the traffic was backed up all the way up to Route 95 North, where it finally thinned out and started moving at a pretty good clip. That is, until we hit the Maine Turnpike.

We moved inch by inch for over an hour. For more than forty-five minutes, I was stuck behind a woman driving a Subaru Outback sporting a bumper sticker that said, Caution: Driver singing . I wanted to stop, get out of my car and tape her mouth shut. Fortunately for her, just as I had that thought the traffic started moving again and from that point on it was clear sailing all the way to West Bath.

Summary: The story begins with Spanky, who is the president of the “He-Man Woman Haters Club” with many school-aged boys from around the neighborhood as members. His best friend, Alfalfa, has been chosen as the driver for the club’s prize-winning go-kart, called “The Blur”, in the annual Soap Box Derby style race. However, when the announcement is made, Alfalfa is nowhere to be found. The boys catch Alfalfa in the company of Darla — “a girl!” Alfalfa isn’t like his friends because he’s in love with Darla, and unfortunately threatens the very existence of their “boys only” club. The club’s members try their hardest to break the two apart, eventually causing their beloved clubhouse to burn down. Darla is mistakenly led to believe Alfalfa feels ashamed of her, so she turns her attentions to Waldo, the new rich kid whose father is an oil tycoon. Further trouble ensures when their prized go-cart “The Blur” is stolen by local neighborhood bullies Butch and Woim. How can they win the big race and its prize trophy?! In addition to having to rebuild the clubhouse, the boys now need a new set of wheels. They band together to build “Blur 2: The Sequel.” Prior to race day, Spanky and Alfalfa reconcile and decide to ride in the two-seat go-kart together.
