Dogs fully embrace hybrid craze
On the college landscape, some believe the approach has been revolutionary, Mullen contends. Its a philosophy he adapted alongside Urban Meyer at Utah and Florida, where he was the offensive coordinator for two national championship teams.I think after 2004 at Utah, boasted Mullen, everybody kind of went to put a lot of this stuff in.
Mullens system is a spread attack with plenty of options. At Utah, Ben Moa, a tight end, lined up at receiver. Paris Warren, a receiver, took a few snaps at quarterback.
At State, the same can be said: receiver Chad Bumphis is a Wildcat quarterback and running back LaDarius Perkins routinely lines up at slot receiver.
The two-for-one (sometimes three-for-one) traits are discovered on film and, in most cases, the coaches react on instinct on recruiting trips.
Versatility is important, Mullen said. Playing multiple positions creates mismatches as seen with Bumphis, a speedster and leading receiver who could play quarterback, Mullen said. And the Tupelo native is not just a threat running the ball like last year in the Wildcat formation.
He throws as good as most of our guys do, Mullen said.
Mullen believes it helps on the recruiting trail. Prospective receivers are unable to predict their future production at MSU based on the amount of passes thrown their way.
You come play for us, we might hand it to you, pitch it to you, line you up at quarterback and snap it to you, Mullen said. ... You recruit those skilled athletes. They dont come to just block. They want the ball in their hands.
Bumphis is the poster boy at receiver with 634 receiving yards and 137 rushing yards, and Perkins rushed for 566 yards and accumulated 247 receiving yards last season.
The spread system with hybrid players has been rinsed and repeated since that 2004 Utah team, which went undefeated. More than a handful of records have fallen with Mullen as an assistant or head coach at Bowling Green, Utah, Florida and MSU since 2001.
Defensively, the Bulldogs have taken the same approach. Backup linebacker Matthew Wells is also used as a nickelback, outside linebacker Deontae Skinner gets his hands dirty as a defensive end, and every linebacker is capable of playing all three positions.
Its a philosophy linebackers coach Geoff Collins borrowed from Ralph Friedgen at Maryland.

The linebackers shift on and off the line of scrimmage, allowing linebackers to double as defender in the nickel. On offense, running backs line up at tight end and vice versa, and receivers take a few snaps at quarterback. On the college landscape,

The Maniitsoq area is underlain predominantly by Archean gneisses. Supracrustal rocks comprise about 10% of the area and consist mainly of amphibolites, but cumulate mafic-ultramafic rocks also occur and locally contain nickel – copper mineralization. However, most of the nickel discovered to date is associated with younger, undeformed norite intrusions that are concentrated in (but not restricted to) a 15 km wide by 75 km long arcuate belt, referred to as the Greenland Norite Belt (GNB), that rims a large, complex known as the Finnefjeld gneiss complex.
