Court records show criminal history of Fort Hood suspect's parents

ORT WORTH, Texas - Army Pfc. Naser Abdo Jason is in jail on a federal charge of possession of unregistered destructive device in connection with what authorities allege was a "terrorist plot" to kill fellow soldiers out of Fort Hood.

Abdo is also facing a military court-martial on charges of possession of child pornography.

His father, a convicted felon, is in Jordan, where he was deported by the U.S. government last year. His mother, of Garland, Texas, has a criminal record in the state of a decade ago.

Much of the environment where Abdo grew up in Garland and Richardson, both suburbs of Dallas, is uncertain. His mother and sister have not spoken to the news media, and neighbors have described only a fairly quiet family and a mother proud of her son's service in the army.

But a search of court records in Texas reveals a family with deep problems several years ago.

His parents, Carlisa Morlan and Jamal R. Abdo, married in Dallas County in 1989 and divorced five years later, according to the records of the state.

Jamal Abdo moved to Garland a few years ago, and one of the first things he did was provide the Garland Police Department to register as a sex offender, Garland police officer Joe Harn said.

"It is from mid-90s, but I can not remember the details of why he had to register," said Harn. Files could not be found on the case Friday.

But about 2003, Jamal Abdo began conversing online with what he thought was a girl of 15 years, said Harn. The girl was actually a detective assigned to Garland sex crimes on the Internet.

In June 2004, he drove to a place to meet the girl and was arrested.

"He thought he would meet the girl to have sex with her," said Harn.

In 2006 he was sentenced to five years in state prison for soliciting a minor and was released in December 2009, according to a spokesman for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

At this point, Jamal Abdo was presented to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He was deported to Jordan in February 2010, according to a spokesman for the agency in Dallas.

Naser mother Abdo, Morlan, pleaded guilty or been found guilty of three drug charges in 2002. She completed probation on those charges, records show. She also served a prison sentence or probation or received for two counts of theft and prostitution in 2001 and '02, according to the records of Dallas County.
