13 WTHRStudents prepare for class at health fair
INDIANAPOLIS - It's back to school for some school districts as early as next week. Events were held across the city Saturday to help parents and students get ready.
Thousands of people lined up well before 9 a.m. at the Marion County Health Department, where free immunizations and school supplies meant big savings. Ka'Harra Zacery was first in a line at 5 a.m., four hours before the start time to get free immunizations and more. With four children in tow, Zacery said losing sleep meant saving money.
"Get as much of the school supplies as I can, to try to minimize my financial spending," she said.
Shawna Clayton has seven children to get ready for the classroom.
"It's well worth it. Wow, hundreds, I know, hundreds," Clayton said, totaling up her savings.
Last year, 25,000 people lined up and nearly half were children.
"It's so important for these kids to be healthy and for them to be successful in school. If they're not healthy, they don't do as well," explained Dr. Virginia Caine, director of the Marion County Health Department.
More than 60 vendors, including the Indianapolis Fire Department, took the opportunity to teach kids about nutrition, exercise and safety.
"I love that fact that we have a caring, a very caring community," added Dr. Caine.
With scorching morning temperatures, volunteers provided plenty of cool treats to satisfy even the biggest kid at heart. One mom cheered in front of a huge fan blowing a cool mist.
Inside, it wasn't the sticky heat, but the stick of a needle behind hesitant smiles.
"Everybody in my house has been saying 'It's going to hurt, it's going to hurt," Megan Moorehead told Eyewitness News. The 12-year-old was in line to get three immunizations.
"It's great. It's great to be able to get them done for free and not cost you an arm and a leg," said Megan's mother, Melissa Moorehead.
Just an ouch or two and plenty of reminders that summer's clock is ticking.
"It's a blessing that they're out here helping us and we're going to use it. We're going to make great use of it," said Shawna Clayton, just before making her way into the fair.
The Marion County Health Department will continue to offer immunizations with a $10 fee, yet no one will be turned away. They stress it's better to get it done sooner than later, so that children don't miss any classes.
