Musicians give local program a boost

Sudbury Youth Rocks program participants are getting ready to release their first CD in September, which will launch the Positive Peer Pressure campaign.

The Youth Rocks program takes young people referred through social service agencies and teaches them the basics of music, with help from volunteer mentors and donated equipment.

Several local musicians have tracks on the CD, including Nothing Good, Key of Four, Set, Lil Z and DJ Gella and Joel Lamarche. A CD release party will be held in September, with proceeds going to help pay for instrument purchases and repairs.

COUNTRY FEST

Manitoulin Country Fest, one of the few all-Canadian country music festivals, takes place from Aug. 4 to 7. Performers include Mike Trudell, Shelly Rastin, Jason Blaine, Tara Oram, Dean Brody, Crystal Shawanda and George Canyon.

* The bluegrass, country, rock, folk, blues and gospel festival, with proceeds going to the Estaire-Wanup Volunteer Fire Department, takes place noon until dark on Aug. 13 and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 14 at 300 Elbow Lake Rd. in Estaire. Featuring Bend of Elbow, The Rivets, Katz, Sam Lahti and the Colts, Mag River, Pam Millar, Wildflowers and the Forster family.

Tickets are $25 for the weekend, $20 for Saturday and $10 for Sunday and are available at Northern Insurance Brokers, Wanup General Store and Estaire Gas Bar.

Children 12-and-younger are free and parking is free. Bring your own lawn chair and refreshments. Food vendors on site. No pets allowed.

* Amanda Rheaume, already well-known on the Ottawa music scene, is taking her show on the road. She performs at Cinco Centavos in Sudbury on Aug. 2, singing from her CD Light of Another Day. Tickets can be purchased at the door.

* Tyler Gilbert and T.B. Judd are touring across Canada this summer, with a stop in Sudbury on August 12 at The Townehouse as part of their Cost of Living tour.

* United Way's Gen Next presents an evening of comedy and music at Little Montreal.

On Aug. 5 from 8 to 11 p.m., local performers and comedians will provide the evening's entertainment.

Tickets, $10, are available at Black Cat, Records on Wheels or the United Way office at 105 Elm St., Suite E-6. Proceeds from ticket sales go to United Way to fund local programs.
