Captain America: Super Soldier Review (Wii)

Captain America has a storied history in gaming but mostly as a secondary character and never really had his own individual game. Captain America: Super Soldier looks to change this with the release coinciding with the new movie Captain America: The First Avenger. The Nintendo Wii version looks to be its very own unique title with an emphasis on comic art style. Can the Nintendo Wii version, normally the inferior version in some cases, stand side by side with their HD counterparts or does it fail to break mediocrity?

A Playable Comic Captain America: Super Soldier for the Wii has its own unique look. It has a very comic feel to it. This is of course not a bad thing, it really plays to the entire Wii market and it lends to the game itself as the property started as comic. The over the top finishers with red, white and blue sparkles going everywhere and the comic look to every one of the main enemies really make the Wii version enjoyable. Throughout the story the player will traverse the Hydra castle and go against new enemies as they progress. The story is unique to the game and actually has different setups than the HD counterpart on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 versions.

Unique Wii Gameplay Unlike many other action titles on the Wii Captain America has great controls and lacks the heavy use of motion. Motion is primarily used for QTE’s and boss fights which is fine with me. Players control Captain America simply by utilizing the nunchuck and the camera with the d-pad on the motion controller. His shield is thrown with the C button and held down allows the player to go into slow-motion accuracy mode where you can paint targets with the wii-mote, highlighting stars and letting go of the C button. It is actually a very easy concept and  comes in handy. Z button is your primary go to button for interaction and blocking and countering when enemies light up and have a giant Z above their head (which means they are about to hit you). A button is used for context jumping which is symbolized by a tiny semi-looped arrow which means ‘hey, you can jump here,’ it’s great but lacks any finesse or skill. The B button is your primary means of attack, constantly mashing it alongside timed use of the Z button is key to many of the bosses and enemies you will encounter. Some areas have metal boxes on the wall which you can break for power-ups like invincibility and invisibility which are useful but rarely put where bosses lurk. Your health is handled by a meter and you break open med boxes and defeat enemies for heart orbs which heal you. Another aspect are the white star points that you can accrue to raise your XP bar which is the white bar below your health. Every time you fill it you can choose a new upgrade which goes from adding an additional star to your stars which allow for more enemies/objects to be targeted with your shield during focus, as well as other abilities and moves.

Great idea and maybe the game could use some motion controlled web-slinging using Kinect/Move or indeed the new Wii U tablet when it comes out. Also, anyone who is looking forward to Batman: Arkham City should check out the Collector's Edition at

Wii Action Replay Powersaves | Console Games and Video Games Reviews

First of all, the SD card didn’t have very current saves and the website doesn’t either. Second, the enclosed software doesn’t even work with Windows 7. Third, the saves on the card weren’t readable by the Wii system. But worst of all the customer service is really bad. Can’t get any by calling or emailing. Save yourself the money and grief and don’t buy this product!
